Bart gets to ride up front today

The modern pursuit of professional sports; a fascinating subject matter. Altogether banal and indulgent? Maybe. Completely, in point of fact. I know that they are a trivial distraction in a world in need of increased benevolent interventions. It’s just these games that are played are so damned entertaining to me. The human drama, unrehearsed and unedited. A serving of reality in my spoon-fed, manicured world. The crowning beauty being that the winner almost always is the team or individual that combines ability, effort and study (with the great equalizer and ultimate intangible of luck always having a say).

Sports, as far as I’m concerned, can save. Seriously. I see them as a remarkably useful tool. They can (and do) provide us with a natural outlet for our competitive tendencies. They allow us to channel these often (and sadly) malicious manifestations our primeval need to compete with and defeat those around us into a constructive medium. In doing so, we are made better by keeping them out of our daily lives. There are valuable lessons to be learned in sports.

My first passion in sport is hockey. I follow the game closely, and derive immense pleasure in doing so. All said, I really do follow all sports to varying degrees, the only exception being NCAA (I decided I simply can't). Sports, sports, sports, sports.

I like sports.
